Paldi Wing, Hoshiarpur district, prevailed over Badho Wing of Gurdaspur district to emerge as the winners in football (boys U-17) in the ongoing 65th Inter-District Games at Guru Nanak Stadium here on Monday.
The final witnessed a fierce contest between players of two wings who went all out to unsettle each other. Eventually, Paldi Wing managed to scramble past Badho Wing with a narrow margin (1-0) which fetched them the winners’ trophy.
In the match for third position, Ghuda Wing in Bathinda district fought it tooth and nail to edge out Ludhiana district 1-0 to finish as the second runners-up. Ludhiana had to be content with the fourth position.
Earlier, in the quarterfinals, Ghuda Wing outnumbered Moga district 2-0 while Bathinda district beat the Punjab Institute of Sports (PIS), Mahilpur 1-0 to make their way into the last four stage.
In other quarterfinals, Paldi Wing toiled hard to tame Phagwara Wing 2-1 and Ludhiana district warded off stiff challenge from Amritsar district before wrapping up the issue 5-4 in a tie-breaker.
However, in the semifinals, Paldi Wing and Badho Wing faced a little resistance from their respective opponents and secured their berths in the title clash. Paldi Wing edged out Ghuda Wing 2-0 while Badho Wing outperformed Ludhiana district 4-1 to set up the summit clash.
