Following a complaint about portion of main Pakhowal Road from Phullanwal Bypass to Lalton Kalan being in a pitiable condition, the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) has marked an inquiry to the Public Works Department (Building and Roads) through its secretary.

Congress leader and former vice-chairman of Local Bodies Cell of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee Gursimran Singh Mand had filed a complaint with the PWD that this particular stretch of main Pakhowal Road (Phullanwal to Lalton) had broken down and there were huge patches where top surface had completely eroded. The poor condition of the road is causing inconvenience to road users.

He had further alleged that sub-standard/inferior material had been used by the construction agency in the construction of the road which had been widened and carpeted at a cost of Rs 9 crore during 2016-17 under the Prime Minister Gram Sadak Yojna with the funds received from the Centre and GLADA. “The damaged portion of the road is in such a bad shape that it has to be repaired and patchwork carried out on regular intervals,” the Congress leader said.

According to Mand, new street lights were fitted when the road was repaired and recarpeted about a year ago. But most of these lights remain non-functional. The busy stretch of the road has become accident-prone due to these non-functional street lights, he added, demanding a high-level probe into the poor workmanship and use of sub-standard material on the road and action as per rule against the construction agency.

Acknowledging the receipt of complaint of the bad condition of road, the e-mail sent by the CMO to the Secretary, Department of PWD (B&R) on October 16, 2018, says that action be taken on the complaint immediately as per government rules/policy and the action taken in this regard be conveyed to the complainant under intimation to the CMO.
