Students and teachers of Panjab University and its affiliated colleges have urged the varsity to consider extending the winter break at least by a week in view of the delay in the examination schedule.

According to the students, their exams are slated for completion on January 7 and the winter vacations are to end on January 9, giving them little or no time to relax before starting the new semester.

The exams started in the second week of November. The winter break is scheduled from December 27, majorly overlapping with the exam schedule.

“We are in no mood to begin with the next semester. It seems too early and we would not get any time to enjoy a proper break,” said a college student.

“Our travel plans have been affected due to the delayed exams, which have ultimately led to reduced vacations. I had planned a visit abroad with my family, but to no avail,” rued a student of a city college.

The staff also seems to be in a tight spot. “With exam duties in double shifts, coupled with evaluations, we are feeling hard pressed. But what is more disturbing is the fact that we would get practically no time to break for winters,” said a teacher.

Former senators, including Inderpal Singh Sidhu and Shaminder Singh Sandhu, said they have been in touch with Dean College Development Council (DCDC) and Dean University Instructions (DUI). They said the university officials are considering the issue and some positive notification is likely in a day or two.

“We have also requested the university to avoid overlapping exams and holidays in future,” the former senators added.
