Punjab anganwadi workers to hold stir on March 8
Protest will be held under the banner of Anganwadi Mulazam Union, Punjab
The anganwadi workers in the state will on March 8, also the International Women’s Day, organise a protest over the state government’s policies.
The protest will be held under the banner of Anganwadi Mulazam Union, Punjab.
Union’s president Sudesh Rani, secretary Jaswinder Kaur and general secretary Surjit Kaur alleged the state government has been exploiting anganwadi workers and helpers, and the latter’s demands were not being fulfilled despite repeated assurances.
“Instead of regularising our services, the government is implementing policies that weaken the scheme and privatises services,” the union alleged.
The leaders said anganwadi workers have been performing their duties with dedication for years, even under difficult circumstances, and yet, they were not being given the status of government employees. They claimed their honorarium is extremely low they don’t get adequate social security benefits.
They alleged that instead of strengthening the Integrated Child Development Services scheme, the government was attempting to impose new burdens on workers, and shift responsibilities without providing necessary facilities or financial support.
The union leaders emphasised that anganwadi workers play a vital role in society by providing nutrition, pre-school education and health services to children and women.
They warned that if the state government did not accept their demands, the union will intensify its struggle in the coming days.
