Punjab VB nabs patwari red-handed while accepting Rs 15,000 bribe

The Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB), during its ongoing drive against corruption in the state, has apprehended Patwari Harkinder Singh, posted at Revenue Office, Payal, Ludhiana, red-handed while accepting a bribe of Rs 15,000.

Giving details on Thursday, an official spokesperson of the state VB said the accused has been arrested based on a complaint lodged by a resident of Payal tehsil.

He said the accused demanded a bribe of Rs 25,000 from the complainant in lieu of making a correction in the mutation of the complainant's land. The accused has already taken the first instalment of Rs 5,000 as a bribe.

Unwilling to pay any illegal gratification, the complainant approached the Vigilance Bureau Economic Offence Wing, Ludhiana. After a preliminary enquiry into his complaint, the VB team laid a trap, during which the accused was arrested.

A case under the Prevention of Corruption Act has been registered against the accused at the VB police station, Economic Offence Wing, Ludhiana, and further investigation into this case is in progress.
