Rare knee surgery conducted successfully at Aykai Hospital

Ludhiana: A rare complex knee replacement was done at Advanced Orthopaedic Insitute (AOI), Aykai Hospital, Ludhiana by Dr Harpreet S Gill, Director, AOI. Dr Gill said the patient had a rare windswept deformity of the knees, which is seen in only 1.5 per cent of the adult population in the world. In this, one knee is bent inward and other is bent outward and patient was confined to wheelchair. Dr Gill said in such rare deformities of knee, the knee implant used is the types used for the revision knee replacement surgery in those cases where knee replacement had failed or giving problems and both knees need to be replaced. It is all the more challenging to perform such a surgery in Corona times, where safety of the patient and the supporting staff is of paramount importance.

Newborn with diaphragmatic hernia treated

A preterm child weighing just 1.1 kg was born with right-sided congenital diaphragmatic hernia. Diaphragmatic hernia is a rare congenital malformation in which, wall between chest and abdomen is not formed and child had liver and intestine in chest. Incidence of right sided diaphragmatic hernia is 2-3 per one lakh births. The newborn was operated successfully at the Christian Medical College and Hospital by Paediatric Surgery team led by Dr William Bhatti, including, Dr Vishal Michael and Dr Chitresh Chaudhary. Post surgery child was kept in the nonatal ICU under care of Dr PV Verughese and was discharged yesterday in a stable condition.

Ministry selects CMCH for Thalassemia Bal Sewa Yojana

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in collaboration with Coal India’s CSR- funded HSCT (Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation) programme titled “Thalassemia Bal Sewa Yojana” has announced the inclusion of the Christian Medical College and Hospital, Ludhiana, as one of the eight major centres in India. The Department of Clinical Haematology, Haemato-Oncology and Bone Marrow (Stem cell) Transplantation was initiated in 2007 and the transplant program started in 2008. So far the institution has performed 185 transplants with more than 80 transplant for thalassaemia patients. A total of Rs20 crores have been allotted for the entire project and the initial Rs2 crore will be given as a first installment and the second installment will be released after the hospital submits UC of 75 per cent of the amount. Dr M Joseph John, Professor and Head of the Department of Clinical Haematology, Haemato-Oncology and Bone Marrow Transplantation, said the grant will offer hope, comfort and encouragement to help improve the quality of life of thalassemia patients. — TNS
