Ludhiana, January 18

Taking a tough stance against encroachments on city roads, the Ludhiana police along with the Municipal Corporation are set to start a special campaign. This initiative is being taken to solve the problem of traffic jams.

As per the police, during a study regarding traffic jams on certain roads in the city, it was observed that many roads were being encroached by shopkeepers and roadside vendors, due to which many spacious roads have turned into streets.

Police Commissioner Rakesh Agrawal deputed ADCPs and ACPs as per the jurisdiction and told them to survey the cause for road jams. Officers were told that if shopkeepers, roadside vendors or rehriwalas were causing traffic jams, then all of them should be first served a warning and if they do not mend their ways, the police would start registering FIRs.

“The police will first appeal to the encroachers to peacefully remove the encroachment, otherwise they will tie up with the Municipal Corporation and encroachments will be removed and even FIRs will be registered against encroachers,” the CP said.

Initially, areas chosen for taking action include Pavillion Mall road to Rajpura Chowk, Damoria Bridge to Kailash Chowk, Jandu Chowk, Jagraon Bridge to Clock Tower, Mata Rani Chowk, Lakkar Bridge, Jagraon Bridge to Civil Hospital road, ESI Hospital to Kochar Market Road, Pakhowal Road, Bhai Bala Chowk to Phullawal, scooter market bus stand to Suman hospital, Model Town, Baba Deep Singh Gurdwara, Jain Mandir Chowk, Dhandra Road to GK Vihar.
