Apprehending overflow of water from sewers during the monsoon, residents of the town have urged the authorities to take remedial steps without delay.

Overflowing sewage has always been a big challenge for the civic body. While those residing in low-lying areas were among the worst-hit due to the absence of proper sewerage system, officials of the Municipal Council claimed that extra arrangements had been made to minimise the inconvenience to residents.

Though the problem will be solved only after the installation of an STP, we are focusing on the desilting of ponds. We are ready with extra electric motors and pumps to deal with the situation. —Balwinder Singh, Joint Deputy Director

Led by former legislator Iqbal Singh Jhoondan, residents alleged that the lackluster attitude of the authorities concerned towards linking the Maherna drain with the disposal tank and installing STP were among the major reasons behind persistent overflow of drains.

Various areas of the town, including Jawahar Nagar, Green Avenue, Railway Road, Amarpura Mohalla, Dhulkot Road, Chand Cinema Road, Guru Nanak Pura, Gaushala Road and Islamia Road, get inundated within a few hours of rain, residents alleged.

Government buildings, including Town Hall, police station and sub-registrar office were no exception to the issue. Residents have urged the civic body officials to take necessary steps to check overflowing sewers as they could lead to an outbreak of diseases amid the pandemic.

Joint Deputy Director Balwinder Singh said officials concerned had been advised to make necessary arrangements to deal with the situation. “Though the problem will be solved only after installation of a STP, right now we are focusing on the desilting of ponds. We are ready with extra electric motors and mud pumps to deal with the situation.”

Singh claimed that the process for installation of the STP had been completed and work on the project will soon start.

Demand sewage treatment plant

Residents, led by former legislator Iqbal Singh Jhoondan, alleged that non-linking of the Maherna drain with the disposal tank and the failure to set up a sewage treatment plant were cited as major reasons behind the inefficient functioning of the sewerage in the town.
