Rights panel moved against installation of illegal gates

After failure to seek justice from the Ludhiana Improvement Trust (LIT) authorities over installation of illegal gates and putting barricades on public roads and streets in the Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar Colony on the Pakhowal Road here - developed and maintained by the LIT, an aggrieved resident has approached the Punjab State Human Rights Commission (PSHRC) for intervention.

In a petition filed with the PSHRC, a resident of the colony Arvind Sharma (House No 114-E) has said the illegal gates were installed at various entry/exit points of the colony by certain residents with the intention of using vacant area around the gates for their personal purpose such as parking vehicles and playing games.

“While installation of gates, or creating any obstruction on public roads and streets is an offence under the provisions of the Punjab MC Act, now barricades have been put up on several public roads and streets which is causing huge inconvenience to residents of the colony and other visitors,” said the complainant.

Sharma further said complaints lodged with the LIT officials in this regard had failed to elicit any positive action with the result that human rights were being violated with impunity by blocking public roads and streets in the colony which called for immediate remedial measures.
