The Jagraon police have arrested four members of a robbers’ gang who had made a failed attempt to steal an MPV from a person after throwing chilli powder into his eyes near Hathur village a couples of days ago. They have been identified as Gurdeep Singh, alias Seera, of Sanghera Chowk Barnala; Yudhvir Singh, alias Dholi, of Barnala, Lakhwinder Singh, alias Fauji, also of Barnala, and Harjinder Singh, alias Kala, of Sangrur.

According to sources, they attempted to snatch a Toyota Innova from Kulwinder Singh of Hathur village while he was going towards his village on Saturday evening. The police officials revealed that the accused sought lift from Kulwinder Singh while he was going towards his village in his vehicle.

Kulwinder offered them lift. On the way, one of the accused threw chilli powder in Kulwinder’s eyes with the motive of snatching his vehicle. However, they fled the scene after they noticed some persons approaching them.

The police had registered a case against unidentified persons in this regard under various sections of the IPC at the Hathur police station.

Jagraon SSP Varinder Singh Brar said the suspects were arrested by a police team near Tallewal village on Sunday evening.

The police have also recovered a stolen Maruti car (PB 10 AJ 8548) from the accused. According to the police, the car was used by them in an attempt to snatch an SUV.

“During preliminary investigation, we learnt that the Maruti car used by the accused in the crime was stolen by them from Sangrur some time ago. The accused are hardened criminals and they have been facing more than 10 police cases registered against them in Sangrur and Barnala districts,” said the SSP.
