Despite many protests by residents, the government authorities have failed to get the Sahnewal-Dehlon road re-carpeted till date.
Daily, thousands of heavy vehicles and commuters pass through this badly damaged stretch that is an open invitation to mishaps.
Some residents and shopkeepers said gravel was laid on a portion of the stretch more than a year ago, but the road was not carpeted. The road’s condition deteriorated during the rainy season as the authorities failed to take timely steps in this regard.
A group of residents recently staged a protest as the road is not being re-carpeted despite their repeated demands. A resident of Dehlon said, “We have raised the matter many times, but neither the authorities concerned nor the elected representative heard our voice. The road is in a shambles for a long time. It was difficult to pass through the stretch during the rainy days. When we pay taxes, it is the responsibility of the government to make sure the provision of good roads and other basic amenities.”
The sarpanch of Shankar village, Ranbir Singh, said the road was in a bad shape for nearly past two years due to which a number of mishaps had taken place on the stretch. The PWD officials had inspected the road a couple of days ago and had said that the work to carpet the road would be started within a few days, he added.
