Ludhiana March 25

Irrespective of any monetary benefits, traffic marshals are discharging their duty at various intersections to keep a check on the movement of residents in the city.

Mandeep Keshav, in-charge, traffic marshals, in the city said, “As many as 599 traffic marshals are attached with the traffic police out of which 297 are discharging their duty right now.”

“Most marshals are from civil defence, who are now offering their services to the Police Department,” Keshav added.

“Despite curfew, many people are still roaming on roads for no reason. We have warned many of them. Some commuters, who are caught at police nakas with uncovered faces, are given masks. They are also warned to stay at home else action will be taken against them,” Keshav said.

“Most volunteers are in private jobs like lawyers, insurance agents, drivers and chemist shop owners,” said traffic marshals. They appealed to youths to shun drugs and join the traffic police as volunteers.

“Now, instead of wasting time in some unproductive work, we are discharging our duty as traffic marshals. We are learning a lot of discipline by working with a disciplined force,” they added.

Meanwhile, some kind-hearted persons are also seen offering tea, milk mad other eatables to cops on duty. “Although marshals work overnight on roads for long hours, they are not given any refreshment by the Police Department,” said sources.
