Ludhiana, February 10

To address the problem of pollution in drains, a discussion was held at Guru Nanak Dev Engineering College in Ludhiana. This discussion was attended by representatives of the Agriculture and Environment Awareness Centre, as well as representatives from an organisation based in Hyderabad. Discussing the seriousness of the matter, Sukhjit Singh, professor, said that besides the Buddha Dariya (which is also called Buddha Nullah due to terrible pollution), several other drains and rivers are heavily polluted. To clean up the water bodies, the shortcomings of government machinery, policies and management were discussed with the public. Punitpal Singh said that pollution in Buddha Dariya has contaminated groundwater to the depth of 100 feet. He added that traces of heavy metals are found in vegetables and other crops grown along the banks of the Buddha Dariya.

PAC members Jaskirat Singh and Kapil Arora shared information about laws to prevent pollution in water bodies. Another speaker, Parmjeet Singh Gazi, elaborated on the efforts made by people to prevent pollution in water bodies, results and political trends in this regard. Professors Rajveer Kaur and Punitpal Singh Cheema also discussed methods of water purification. Experts emphasised that awareness and shared efforts are needed to identify responsibilities and find solutions to these issues.
