Concerns over the verification of migrant residents in Phagwara were raised on Tuesday by Shiv Sena (UBT) city president Raman Sharma, who urged authorities to strengthen background checks to ensure public safety.
Addressing the media, Sharma said that the number of people settling in Phagwara and other parts of Punjab from outside regions has increased in recent years, prompting the need for systematic verification of their identity and activities.
He alleged that inadequate police verification of tenants and migrant workers could pose risks to law and order if not addressed in a timely manner. He called on the administration to implement stricter verification mechanisms, including mandatory submission of identity documents by tenants through property owners to local police stations.
Sharma further suggested that landlords and shopkeepers should exercise due diligence before renting out properties, ensuring that the credentials of tenants are properly verified.
He emphasised that consistent monitoring and verification could contribute to curbing incidents of theft and other crimes. Highlighting population trends, he noted that Phagwara has witnessed a steady rise in its population over the years, with a significant proportion attributed to incoming residents.
He stated that while migration for livelihood is common, it is essential for authorities to distinguish between lawful residents and individuals with potential criminal backgrounds through proper checks.
