A delegation of the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) will on April 24 meet Governor Gulab Chand Kataria and submit a memorandum demanding restoration of the state’s role in the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB).

In a meeting on Saturday at Isru Bhawan here, the farmers strongly opposed the Centre’s decision to remove the state’s representation from the BBMB and resolved to intensify its protest.

More than 20 farmer organisations were a part of the meeting. SKM leader Ruldu Mansa alleged the Centre was “systematically eliminating” the state’s representation from various institutions to make unilateral decisions.

The farmers also raised concerns over the slow pace of wheat procurement and lifting at mandis. Mansa said the delay was causing severe hardship to the cultivators, and a memorandum on this matter would also be submitted to the Governor.

He warned the BBMB move was aimed at controlling the state’s water resources, which he said the farmers would not allow.

“If state members are not reinstated to the BBMB, we will launch a statewide agitation,” he said.

The SKM urged the state government to clarify its stand and exert pressure on the Centre to retain a say in the board. Mansa emphasised the Governor, being the Centre’s representative, would be the first point of appeal for their demands.

He also stressed the need for a clear policy to ensure smooth procurement and prevent recurring difficulties faced by farmers during the harvest season.
