The Satish Chander Dhawan Government College Alumni Association, Ludhiana, and sports fraternity mourned the death of the multi-faceted sportsperson and Olympian hurdler Jagmohan Singh (88), who breathed his last in Patiala on Tuesday.

Members of the association, including principal Dr Dharam Singh Sandhu and coordinator Brij Bhushan Goyal, along with Amarjit Singh Sandhu, Prabhjot Singh and SS Bhogal, recalled achievements of the illustrious sports personality who created a niche for himself in the field of sports and introduced scientific fitness training methods in different sports disciplines, especially athletics.

Jagmohan was born on April 1, 1932, at Rajoana Kalan village in the district. He, while studying here, created a new meet record in hurdles in the All-India Inter-Universities Athletics Meet in 1952. His grooming and passion for sports steered him, securing a berth in the Indian contingent for the Rome Olympics, after equalling the 14.05 seconds national record set by Shri Chand. He made the college proud, Goyal said.

Jagmohan, who was a science graduate from the local SCD Government College, Dr RL Anand, Dr Muthiah, Balkishan Singh and Gurbaksh Singh were instrumental in conducting the 1982 Asian Games in Delhi.

Paying tributes to the Olympian, Teja Singh Dhaliwal, honorary general secretary, Punjab Basketball Association, said the Olympian’s contributions as joint director general and then Dean (teaching) of the Sports Authority of India, as instructor at the NIS, Patiala, and Director, Sports, Punjabi University, Patiala were unparallel.
