Students show their mettle as athletics meet kicks off at govt girls college in Ludhiana

Students showed their mettle at sports ground at Government College for College for Girls as the institute’s 83rd annual athletics meet kicked off on Friday, said officials.

Students participated actively in various athletics and strength competitions on the opening day of the two-day event.

Ajinder Pal Kaur, member, Punjab State Commission for Women, inaugurated the meet. She was welcomed by principal Suman Lata, vice-principal Sarita Khurana and Nivedita Sharma, head, Department of Physical Education.

Ravina was the first to cross the finish line in the gruelling 3,000-metre race and Kiranjit Bawa bagged the top spot in the long jump event.

Komaljit and Sudha bagged the second and the third positions, respectively, in the 3000m race.

In long jump, Ravina bagged the second spot, and Priyanka and Jasmine were declared joint third.

In below 65-kg category of dead lift, Shreya, Sakshi and Hashrat bagged the top three positions, respectively. In the open weight category, Neetu stood first, followed by Kamal and Lachhmi.

Earlier, the programme began with the flag hoisting ceremony, followed by the administration of the sports oath to students. The ceremonial torch was lit by selected students — Manali, Vani, Kamaljot, Aishveer, Jasmine, Drishti, Anunima, Simran, Ramanjit, Lachhmi and Lahushi, followed by a march past and a bhangra performance by the Sports Department students.

The chief guest stressed the importance of sports in promoting discipline and positive energy among youth. She said that participation in sports is more important than winning and highlighted the state government’s “Khedan Wattan Punjab Diyan” initiative was aimed at encouraging youth to engage in constructive activities.
