City swimmers won top honours in the team event (4 x 200-metre free relay for men) and Anmol Jindal clinched a gold medal in an individual event (400-metre individual medley for men).

Meanwhile, five meet records were reset on Saturday, two each by hosts Sangrur and Mohali districts, while Ferozepur rewrote one record.

In the women’s 200-metre backstroke, Arshpreet Kaur from Mohali created a new record. She clocked 02.45:24 seconds to put to shade the existing record of 02.45:28 seconds set by Gurbinder Kaur of Hoshiarpur in 2007.

Similarly, hosts Sangrur district created two meet records. Both these records were set by Deepali Attri.

In the 50-metre freestyle, Deepali took 0:28.92 seconds to eclipse the old record of 00:30.15 seconds set by her last year. She again improved upon her record in the 50-metre backstroke event, wherein she clocked 00:33.19 second to erase her record of 00.35:10 seconds, wrote in the last edition of this championship.

Vijay Inder Singla, Punjab Cabinet Minister for PWD and Education, declared the championship open, in which around 200 swimmers drawn from 12 districts in addition to the Punjab Police were vying for top honours.

He promised to get the pool at Sangrur, indoor and all-weather. He congratulated the swimmers from Punjab, who won positions in the National Aquatic Championship last year.
