Ludhiana, July 11

The Directorate of Environment and Climate Change and the PPCB asked owners of dairies located on Bhamian Road, outside the MC’s jurisdiction, to make required arrangements for managing cow dung and untreated effluent immediately.

There are about 32 dairies outside the MC limits in the Bhamian cluster. These have not installed effluent treatment plants and are discharging untreated effluent directly into the Budha Nullah. — Sandeep Bahl, Senior Environmental Engineer

A meeting was organised today with dairy owners of the Bhamian cluster under the chairmanship of Kahan Singh Pannu, Secretary (Agriculture),-cum Director, Directorate of Environment and Climate Change.

There are two major dairy clusters — at Haibowal and Tajpur Road — within the MC limits and one at Bhamian, which is outside the MC limits.

Kahan Singh said a lot of time had already been given to the dairy owners to manage the cow dung and effluent.

He said the effluent from dairies was discharged into Buddha Nullah and it was polluting the water. In such a scenario, no additional time should be given to them.

He directed the dairy owners to make arrangements to resolve the issue and give a concrete proposal during their hearing, scheduled before the PPCB Member Secretary on July 21.

He said no untreated effluent would be allowed to be discharged into Buddha Nullah at any cost and strict penal action would be taken under Section 70 of the Punjab Canal and Drainage Act, 1873.

Senior Environmental Engineer Sandeep Bahl said: “The Punjab Pollution Control Board has already taken up the matter regarding dairies falling outside the limits of the Municipal Corporation. There are about 32 dairies outside the MC limits in the Bhamian cluster. These have not installed effluent treatment plants and are discharging untreated effluent directly into the Budha Nullah. Also, cow dung generated from these diaries is not managed properly and ends up in the nullah.”
