Team gets patent for ‘synthetic multiple antigenic peptide-based diagnostics’

Ludhiana, November 26

A team of investigators at the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI), led by Dr Yashpal Singh Malik, has made a ground-breaking invention on bovine rotavirus diagnosis which has been recognised by the Central Government by protecting it through a patent.

Dr Malik is currently serving as Dean, College of Animal Biotechnology, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU), Ludhiana. The research work was initiated under the leadership of Dr Malik at the Indian Veterinary Research Institute, UP, with an aim to come up with an effective diagnostics against rotavirus infection in bovines.

The team has identified certain synthetic multiple antigenic peptides that can be used to detect the rotavirus infection which causes diarrhoea in newborn and young calves. It is economically an important disease and has been reported worldwide. Timely diagnosis of the infectious disease can help prevent it and save farmers from further economic losses.

Dr Inderjeet Singh, Vice-Chancellor, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, has congratulated Dr Malik for his immense contribution to this exemplary research work and stated that he expects that his able leadership would enable the College of Animal Biotechnology to do farmer-oriented translational research work. — TNS
