Thief who fled from police custody nabbed

A thief nabbed by the Police Division no. 8 in a theft case had fled from the custody of cops yesterday.

The Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADCP), Sameer Verma, said accused Gagandeep Singh, a resident of Rishi Nagar, had fled from the police custody while he was being taken to Meritorious School for coronavirus test.

He was arrested on August 12 under Section 379 of the Indian Penal Code for stealing a motorcycle, the ADCP added.

When Gagandeep was taken for giving sample for Covid test and constable Buta Singh was signing documents at the centre, he pushed the cop, scaled the wall and fled, the ADCP said. Cops tried to chase the accused, but he disappeared, the ADCP added. Today, a tip-off about whereabouts of the accused was received, the ADCP said. Accordingly, a police party was sent to arrest him, the ADCP added.

Two smugglers held with 530-gm heroin

The Special Task Force (STF) has nabbed two notorious smugglers and recovered 530 gm of heroin from their possession. The accused have been identified as Lakhwinder Singh Rinku (40) of Guru Nanak Colony, Dehlon, and Sanju Loomba (40) of Himmat Singh Nagar. One of the accused Anup Singh Rinku of Dugri managed to give a slip to the police party.

The AIG (STF), Snehdeep Sharma, said secret information was received about accused, who were going to deliver consignment of drugs to their clients. They were present at a house in Guru Nanak Colony.

Accordingly, a raid was conducted and the two accused nabbed with drugs while one managed to flee, the AIG added. A car of the accused was also impounded, the AIG said.

During preliminary questioning, Rinku disclosed that he was driver by profession and already facing a heroin smuggling case while Loomba said he was a property dealer and had entered into the notorious trade to become rich in a short span of time, the AIG added.
