Ludhiana, August 9
To curb production of lahan and smuggling of liquor in the district, Deputy Commissioner Varinder Kumar Sharma has directed officials of the Excise and Anti-Smuggling Cell of the Ludhiana police to tighten the noose around people indulging in such illegal trades. Such miscreants should be nabbed and put behind the bars without fail.
Acting on the orders of the DC, the Excise Department has confiscated over 8.8 lakh litres of lahan (undistilled illicit liquor) in the district since July 1, 2020. He said such raids would continue in the coming days as well and no person would be allowed to prepare illicit liquor. Drums, plastic cans and utensils used for making the illicit liquor had also been recovered during the raids. A boat and divers were also pressed into service so that maximum quantity of lahan was seized.
As per information, during 4,390 raids since July 1, 2020, a total of 202 FIRs have been registered, 209 persons have been nominated, 3697.5 litres of licit liquor and 42637.49 litres of illicit liquor have been confiscated, 295 litres of lahan have been recovered, while 8,88,608 litres of lahan have been destroyed. — TNS
