Sahnewal, August 5
Two trucks, each coming from different directions, rammed into a bakery shop after colliding at Kohara Chowk in the wee hours today. The driver of trunk (bearing registration No. HR 38 X 7602), who was coming from the Sahnewal side, suddenly took a wrong turn from Kohara Chowk. His vehicle collided with a truck (bearing registration No. PB 08 BR 9137) driven by Dilbag Singh of Shahkot, Jalandhar, who was coming from the Ludhiana side, at Kohara Chowk around 2 pm today.
Both drivers lost control over their trucks, which then rammed into a nearby bakery shop. The accident led to a huge traffic jam on the Ludhiana-Chandigarh road, which could not be cleared for the next six hours.
The police had a tough time clearing the traffic congestion. It was only when cranes pulled out trucks from the bakery shop that the traffic could be streamlined.
Owner Deepak Kumar said all material stored in his bakery shop was destroyed. “I have suffered a loss of Rs 2 lakh. A complaint has been lodged with the police. Officials have assured appropriate action in the case,” said Deepak.
Investigation officer ASI Major Singh said owners of the two trucks had been called. A case would be registered in this regard soon, he said.
When asked about delay in clearing the traffic congestion, the ASI said the police reached the spot soon after getting information about the accident. “Removing two vehicles from the accident spot with the help of cranes took a long time,” he said.
