Union calls off 3-day strike

LUDHIANA: The Punjab Roadways PunBus Contract Workers Union has called off its three-day long strike which was scheduled to be held from February 4 to 6.

The Punjab Roadways PunBus Contract Workers Union has called off its three-day long strike which was scheduled to be held from February 4 to 6. The union took the decision after having a meeting with State Transport Director Tejinder Singh Dhaliwal.

Dhaliwal assured the union to fulfill their long pending demands. He said the government has asked the Punjab Roadways PunBus Contract Workers Union to submit a draft of their demands.

The union members would hold a meeting with senior officials of the Transport Department on Monday.

Satnam Singh, president, Punjab Roadways PunBus Contract Workers Union, confirmed that the union has decided to call of the strike following an assurance by the authority concerned. “We will submit our demands to the authorities on February 4. We hope that the government will make efforts to fulfill our demands. For now, we have called off the strike,” said Satnam.

Main demands of the union include regularisation of drivers and conductors hired under contract system by Punjab Roadways, allottment of equal timings to buses of Punjab Roadways, implementation of equal work and equal pay and increase in salary of contract workers, among others.
