Vet varsity surgeons hog limelight at national symposium

LUDHIANA: Scientists of the Department of Veterinary Surgery and Radiology, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University(GADVASU), Ludhiana, presented research papers in the 42nd Annual Congress of Indian Society for Veterinary Surgery and National Symposium on “Advances in diagnostic imaging and surgical techniques in farm and companion animals” organised at College of Veterinary Science, Navsari Agricultural University, Navsari, Gujarat.

Scientists of the Department of Veterinary Surgery and Radiology, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University(GADVASU), Ludhiana, presented research papers in the 42nd Annual Congress of Indian Society for Veterinary Surgery and National Symposium on “Advances in diagnostic imaging and surgical techniques in farm and companion animals” organised at College of Veterinary Science, Navsari Agricultural University, Navsari, Gujarat.

Research work of Dr Deepesh Kumar, entitled “Comparison of dexmedetomidine and xylazine as preanaesthetic for general anaesthesia in equine colic surgery patients” presented by Dr SK Mahajan, was adjudged the best paper in the Anaesthesiology session. The work highlighted the success story of the GADVASU in providing safe anaesthetic protocols for equine colic, in which horses were at a high risk.

Research paper entitled “Evaluation of arthroscopic portals in bovine stifle arthropathies” presented by Dr Tarunbir Singh, was awarded as the second best paper in the orthopaedics session. The paper emphasised the use of minimally invasive arthroscopic surgical procedures for stifle joint. The GADVASU is credited for the use of arthroscopy for treating joint problems of cattle, buffaloes and horses for the first time in India.

Another research paper authored by Dr Jasmeet Singh and presented by Dr J Mohindroo “Right dorsal displacement of the large colon as a cause of surgical colic in six horses”, was adjudged the second best paper in the equine surgery session. The paper highlighted the pathophysiology, diagnosis and treatment protocols for right dorsal displacement of the large colon, which is a life threatening condition in equine.
