Wait for Government College (East) to become operational seems to be getting longer. It was expected that classes would start in the new building from this session, but it seems to be a distant dream given the pace of construction going on at the site.

There are 82 students in the college and they take classes at SCD Government College. As of now, only the BA stream is offered. More streams would be offered once the new building becomes functional.

Sanjeev Talwar, MLA East, took the initiative of starting this college to cater to the educational requirements of youngsters residing in that part of the city so that they don’t have to travel much far in pursuit of education.

Dr Dharam Singh, Principal of SCD Government College who has also been given charge of the new government college, said 82 students who had got admission to the new college were attending classes in SCD College as the building of the new college was under construction.

“Work at the building site is going little slow but we have asked the department concerned to speed up construction as we want to start classes for the next semester from the new building. Classes for BCom, BSc and BBA will be started only when the building comes up. It is not possible to adjust a large number of students in SCD College,” said the principal.

In January, 2017, the foundation stone of the college was laid and construction began in November, 2018. Rain also affected the pace of construction. Although new session will begin in another four months, it seems completion of the building will take more than six months.

Meanwhile, Talwar, for whom it is dream project, said a period of nine months had been allotted for the completion of the project.

“We are expecting that one block will get ready by the end of June so that the next semester can be started from here,” said Talwar.

A student of the new college, who attends classes at SCD College, said he hoped the new semester would begin in the new building of the college. As SCD College is quite far from his place, he finds it difficult to commute daily, he added.
