Ludhiana, July 12

A city resident has threatened to go on hunger strike against the proposed garbage dump at Bhai Chattar Singh Park in Model Town. Gurpal Singh Grewal, a resident of Model Town, also staged a protest by carrying placards at the proposed dumping site in the park on Thursday.

The park was built in the memory of Late Cadet Chattar Singh Dhadhli of 3rd Punjab Battalion of NCC, who died on January 2, 1954. The park has been in a state of neglect for the past many years.

While protesting the MC move, Grewal said: “It is very unfortunate that the MC was disrespecting Bhai Chattar Singh by setting up a garbage dump at this park. Instead of developing parks, the civic body wants to keep children away from parks by using them as dumps.”

He demanded that the civic body must scrap its plan of setting up a garbage dump at the park. “Our memories are attached to this park. I used to play here in my childhood. I don’t want to see it in the shape of a garbage dump. Stink emanating from dump will keep visitors away. If the MC starts dumping garbage at the park, I will go on hunger strike,” he added.

It was learnt that officials of the MC health branch have come up with the idea of shifting a dump located at the scooter market under the bus stand flyover to Bhai Chattar Singh Park.

The SAD councillor from Ward No. 46, Harbhajan Singh Dang, said: “It is a very wrong move to set up a garbage dump at Bhai Chattar Singh Park. We will not allow the MC to set up a garbage dump at the park. Our delegation will meet the Mayor and the Municipal Commissioner on Friday in this regard.”
