The Court of Additional Sessions Judge Aashish Abrol has convicted Hardeep Singh (22) of Baranhara village, Hambran Road, here, on the charges of sexually assaulting a minor girl residing in his neighbourhood. He was sentenced to undergo five -year rigorous imprisonment (RI) under the POCSO Act and pay a fine of Rs 2,000 to the victim.

A case under Section 354 of the IPC and Sections 7, 8 and 10 of the POSCO Act was registered against the accused at the PAU police station on March 14, 2019, following a complaint given by the mother of the girl.

The complainant had told the police that on March 1, 2019, after returning from school, her daughter was playing outside the house with her friends. The accused called the girl and pushed her inside his house and sexually assaulted her. The police had registered a case against the accused and arrested him. He pleaded innocence during the trial. However, after appreciating the evidence on record, the court found him guilty and sentenced him accordingly.
