Mohali, March 27

Taking note of reports of paying guests and other tenants being forced to vacate the premises by landlords. Girish Dayalan, Deputy Commissioner, Mohali, ordered that no landlord shall evict students/ paying-guests and other tenants until the curfew ends.

“This is not justified as moving large number of people defeats the whole purpose of the lockdown and only increases the chances of the spread of Covid-19. Moreover, the public transport has been closed down. Further, right to shelter is a constitutional right. It is impressed upon all landlords and house owners that livelihoods may have been impacted and even the banks are closed for public dealing in the state. In view of this, it has been appealed that the students/ paying-guests and other tenants may not be compelled to immediately pay rent due; and non-payment of rent should not be used as a ground for eviction, ” reads the order.
