Movie Review - Jinde Meriye: New twist in an old tale

Parmish Verma and Sonam Bajwa were last seen together in Singham. Their chemistry was lauded back then, so having them on board again is the USP of the film. Among the most anticipated films of the year, Jinde Meriye is a romantic drama. It is a story of Yaadi (Parmish Verma) and his beloved Rehmat (played by Sonam Kapoor). They are childhood buddies who turn lovers. While Yaadi is a careless boy in college, Rehmat is a sincere student. Daughter of a professor (Hardeeep Gill) who is a single parent, she dreams of a simple and honest life. On the other hand, Yaadi wants quick success and have all the luxuries. They both want to be married but Rehmat’s dad is against it because he thinks Yaadi isn’t the right guy for her because of his attitude towards life.

As a consequence of some unpleasant events, Rehmat has to choose between her father and her lover. She, of course, sides her father. They both move to Scotland and start a new life. Like any typical Punjabi family, the father finds an NRI for her daughter. Meanwhile, Yaadi, who is madly in love with Rehmat makes it to England against all odds. The movie gets another turn, when he joins a drug mafia to realise his dreams. With the ambition to prove Rehmat’s father that he has all the wealth and comfort to wed his daughter, Yaadi does everything illegal. He has everything but the love of his life. The movie has another angle and that’s the best part about it. Even after being a cliché story of a guy and girl in love who go through separation which leads the guy to take the wrong path, this one focuses on how the use of drugs is killing millions. It also highlights the fact that not every story can have a happy ending, especially when the hero indulges in wrongful acts lending it a touch of reality. So, the premise maybe old but the treatment is fresh. As far as acting is concerned, the supporting cast holds the story equally strong as the lead pair. At points though, Parmish is unable to reflect the emotions that need to be shown by his character. Parmish and Sonam do look good together. Individually, Sonam did not have a very strong character in the story and somewhere the flick is dominated by the male actors. All in all, it has its goods and bads but surely doesn’t make you regret after watching it.
