‘Goldfish’ is a poignant rendition of the reality of dementia and how it affects human relations. Deepti Naval (Sadhana Tripathi) and Kalki Koechlin (Anamika Fields), as mother and daughter, delicately pick the strings of emotions from an engulfing silence of memory loss — revealing and disturbing in equal measure.

The movie starts with Ana getting a call from her mother’s neighbour, Laxmi (Bharti Patel). She is told that her mother has started forgetting, and needs help.

The daughter arrives home in England after a long gap. Sadhana is sure at the outset that Ana won’t be staying back. The nuances of the damaged relationship between the mother and daughter are etched to near-perfection. Ana has a recurring memory of childhood trauma and Sadhana reminds her, “You and I have hated each other for years.”

The reduced human interaction during the Covid pandemic is shown delicately in the movie, underlining the over-arching effects of loneliness, alienation and more pertinently, the bonding that comes into play effortlessly.

Ana wants to help but her mother keeps on reminding her that she was not wanted. Interestingly, the pain becomes the cure and the daughter gets more protective of her mother.

Rajit Kapur (Ashwin Raina) as Sadhana’s friend and Laxmi as the neighbour have given memorable performances. Deepti Naval, the star performer that she is, and Kalki Koechlin deserve all credit for their superlative acting. As does the director and co-writer, Pushan Kripalani. Tapas Relia has beautifully woven the magic of classical music into the slow pace of the script.

The dysfunctional family leaves you with a permanence that hurts as well as heals. The Anurag Kashyap presentation will linger in your memory long after you’ve seen ‘Goldfish’. Don’t miss it.
