Love and loads of luck
A still from Qismat

Here is a piece of good news for Bollywood director Karan Johar; he would be happy to know that now Punjabi cinema has a film that will make the audiences laugh, cry and also fall in love. Minus the opulence and grandeur of Karan Johar films, here comes a film that can be rounded as one ‘true blooded’ romantic film - Qismat. The film gives Punjabi cinema its Rahul and Anjali (Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol), Ammy Virk and Sargun Mehta. The two actors come together as an onscreen couple after Angrej and with a song by the same name, Qismat.

Directed by Jagdeep Sidhu, Qismat is a film that will make the audience feel the pain and joy of falling in love. (You can choose your chronological order). Even though the film comes with a story that you might have seen somewhere in Bollywood, in bits and parts, still it sounds as fresh as dew.

Only a few directors have managed to dabble with romance on screen, and Jagdeep Sidhu is one such director who has handled the subject with ‘love’. The dialogues in the film are light yet hitting, in fact it has hundred romantic pick up lines that might come to your rescue someday. The film has dollops of humorous dialogues, the credit for which goes to the dialogue writer and Ammy Virk for delivering them in such a way that even the saddest person wouldn’t help smiling.

Qismat could be a Karan Johar kind of romantic film, but the romance in the film is very relatable, at least the boys and girls of Punjab and Chandigarh can relate to it. It is a kind of romance that one feels is possible in real life, till of course it takes the filmi cut, which again is believable for the silver screen.

Ammy Virk and Sargun Mehta share a strong onscreen chemistry. Ammy, makes every word he says achievable in real life. He is one effortless actor who can make the audiences laugh, cry and now, believe in true love. Sargun Mehta’s, currently one of the most talented female actresses of the industry, effortless acting and her girl-next-door image make her stand out from the entire lot.

Apart from looking good together on screen, the two artistes complement each other as well. Gugu Gill in the father’s role is good and so is Harby Sangha in the short and sweet role of golgappa wala.

The film does have some drag moments, but as they say Ishq aur jung main sab jayaz hai. The climax is abrupt and to some extent predictable, and new as well but this doesn’t steal Qismat’s luck. The film also has one of the best romantic tracks any Punjabi film has ever had. The songs composed by B Praak and written by Jaani are the soul of the film.  Qismat is romance in full bloom, and it is all set to change the Qismat of Punjabi cinema and everyone involved in the project!
