A bit of morning magic does the trick

Ramandeep Saini

My eyes opened to familiar voices. It has been years that my sister and I have woken up to talks between my parents about a pending household item to be bought, last night’s wedding function, suddenly elevated pain in leg, overdue visit to a relative’s house, upcoming college fee payment, etc. The topics underwent a change after we sisters got married. Now, morning chit-chats are about our married lives, grandchildren and families from the other side. Mom and dad, both early risers, have never missed this part of the day, the only exception is when they are travelling or guests are in the house.

After their morning walk together, they would sit down for talks, which were shorter when dad was in service, but extended to longer ones after retirement. Tea became a mandatory companion. All crucial decisions about investments, our education, jobs, matrimonial alliances, construction of house, and what not were taken during these chats. My parents have diverse personalities and fight like other couples, but mornings are an exception. I believe in the existence of some magical element during these conversations, owing to which every issue discussed brings consensus. I have admired the compatibility and poise with which both of them listen to each other. Morning magic works as the body and mind is calm and receptive. The whole day afterwards they cannot be seen at so much ease.

Holidays or long weekends bring us back to our nest and the excitement on the faces of our parents is beyond explanation. The morning hour becomes more exciting with me and my sister joining them (thanks to them for making us early risers too) and adding our bit of information. Such mornings are usually longer with lot of information exchange happening, from the recent purchases to what is happening at our workplaces and the changes in the behaviour of our growing kids. The blessing in disguise is the advice and tips we get from our parents for routine problems.

Running into the 14th year of my marriage and a hectic schedule balancing my work life and household tasks, I had this sudden realisation that my husband and I badly need this morning magic. Our sons needing our immediate attention and ever-demanding jobs hardly leave us with any time. I feel the absence of this morning hour in my life. I am looking forward to a time when we will have fewer priorities and will be blessed to experience this morning magic.
