Prime Minister Narendra Modi today stressed on “a collective fight against poverty, unemployment, drought, flood, pollution, corruption and violence”. He said the target of making India a $5 trillion economy by 2024 was “challenging, but achievable”.

Addressing Niti Aayog’s Governing Council meeting here,  the PM reiterated his government’s commitment to double farmers’ income by 2022. “This requires focus on fisheries, animal husbandry, horticulture, fruit and vegetables and the benefits of Kisan Samman Nidhi and other farmer-centric schemes.”

Noting there was need for structural reforms in agriculture, he spoke of “boosting corporate investment, strengthening logistics and providing ample market support” by ensuring that the food processing sector grew at a pace faster than grain production.

Official sources said PM Modi was of the view that the focus should remain on good governance as it had led “to remarkable progress in several aspirational districts”.

The PM said the battle against Naxal violence was “now in the decisive phase” and must be dealt with firmly. At the same time, development initiatives should be equitable and fast-paced.

He stressed that Niti Aayog had a key role in ensuring  “Sabka saath, sabka vikas, sabka vishwas”. With several parts of the country facing a drought-like situation, Modi called for a ‘per drop, more crop’ strategy.
