Samajwadi Party MLA from Swar Tanda Abdullah Azam and his supporters were today arrested for violating CrPC Section 144 in Rampur. Moradabad MP ST Hasan and former Samajwadi Party MP Dharmendra Yadav were also detained while they were on their way to Rampur for a show of strength in support for Azam Khan, who has been accused of land grabbing in the district.

Rampur District Magistrate Aunjaneya Kumar Singh confirmed that Abdullah has been arrested and kept in a temporary jail in the city.

Following the party’s decision to march to Rampur to protest against the victimisation of SP MP Azam Khan and his son Abdullah Azam, the district administration imposed CrPC Section 144 on Wednesday night and beefed up security across the district and sealed its borders.

The police stopped and detained several SP leaders and their supporters who were marching towards Rampur. Party activists took to streets various cities in western UP. Party MLAs Faheem Irfan and Irfan Solanki were detained near Bhilai Nagar.

Dharmendra Yadav said, “The state government is doing injustice with Azam Khan and his son. If this does not stop, lakhs of Samajwadis will take to the streets. We will fight for Azam Khan and will save Jauhar University at all costs.”  — TNS
