Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved a proposal worth over Rs. 12,000 crore for electrification of 13,000-km railway route, a step toward achieving 100 per cent electrification of its tracks in 12 years’ time.
Addressing the press, Railways Minister Piyush Goyal said engineers at Indian Railways had developed a technology to convert exiting diesel engines into electric locomotives.
He, however, said the national transport monolith would continue to require diesel engines for border areas and standby.
