Compounding trouble for senior advocate couple Anand Grover and Indira Jaising, the CBI today carried out simultaneous searches at their home and offices in the National Capital and Mumbai.

As the CBI officials were conducting searches here at her residence, Jaising claimed that she and her husband were being “targeted” by the agency due to their work in the field of human rights. “Grover and I are being targeted for the human rights work that we have done over the years,” she told mediapersons outside her residence here.

The CBI’s today’s raid, which also included premises in Mumbai belonging to Lawyers Collective, an NGO run by Grover, came a month after the probe agency registered a case against him for alleged criminal conspiracy following a complaint filed by Ministry of Home Affairs.

A senior CBI official said, “Five places in Mumbai and Delhi have been searched. Two premises of Lawyers Collective and one residence of Grover in Mumbai and office and one residential premise in Delhi were searched.”

He said the agency recovered incriminating documents during the searches and seizure memos have been served to the couple.

The CBI had, last month, registered a case of alleged criminal conspiracy, cheating and violations of the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) against Lawyers Collective and Grover.

The probe agency registered the case on June 13 under the Prevention of Corruption Act after a scrutiny of records provided by the MHA, which showed that there were “prima facie violations of various provisions of the FCRA”, CBI officials had then said.
