President Ram Nath Kovind saluted the Indian farmers on the eve of the 72nd Republic Day and backed the controversial agriculture reform legislations terming them “long-pending”.

Hailing the farmers, soldiers and scientists for ensuring food, border and health security, the President said the government’s commitment to farmers’ welfare remained undoubted.

“Economic reforms have continued apace and have been supplemented by long-pending reforms in the areas of labour and agriculture through legislation. The path to reform at the initial stages may cause misapprehensions. However, it is beyond doubt that the government remains singularly devoted to farmers’ welfare,” the President said amid a raging agitation by farmers.

The President in his address praised farmers for making India self-reliant in foodgrain and dairy and for sustaining the agricultural production despite Covid-19. “A grateful nation is fully committed to the welfare of our farmers,” he said.

Saluting soldiers for securing national boundaries and scientists for “decoding the Covid-19 virus and developing vaccines” in record time, the President said, “A grateful nation greets our farmers, soldiers and scientists.”

The President urged every Indian to take the vaccines when their turn comes.
