COVID-19 claimed its first victim from among the Telangana State Police Department when a 37-year-old constable, posted at Kulsumpura police station here died at Gandhi Hospital due to corona virus on Wednesday.

Constable Dayakar Reddy hails from Nalgonda district and is survived by his wife and three children. The entire family, however, tested negative for the killer virus.

The police constable was posted on active policing duty in the Purana Pul are of old city for almost two weeks when he got symptoms of COVID-19. He was immediately shifted to the nearly Gandhi hospital and was tested positive for coronavirus. Samples of 16 policemen who were in contact with him have been sent for testing and four from among them have been kept in home quarantine.

Telangana DGP Mahender Reddy condoled the death of Dayakar, who belonged to the 2007 batch of police recruits. He said that the state government and Telangana police will extend all possible support to his family.

The policeman was admitted to the hospital on May 13 and tests reports on May 15, confirmed that he had COVID-19. Following five days of treatment, the policeman breathed his last on May 20. His last rites were performed today and all COVID-19 protocol was followed.
