AIIMS New Delhi Director Randeep Guleria on Sunday said all vaccines licensed by the Indian regulators will be safe and it is advisable for all to get themselves vaccinated.

Guleria, however, said only registered persons can get vaccinated and registrations are currently on only for priority groups of one crore health workers, two crore frontline workers and 27 crore people aged 50 and above and those aged below 50 with co-morbid conditions.

He said those with an active COVID infection should wait for 14 days post recovery to get the jab as it is not known how the vaccine works during the infection.

The expert, however, said those who have recovered from COVID need to get vaccinated to develop a better immune response.

In three videos released by the government today to boost confidence ahead of Drug Controller’s expected nod to Covishield and COVAXIN, Guleria also said vaccines will be rolled out only once safety is established and all licensed vaccines will have comparable safety and efficacy data.

He said some common side effects of vaccines like fever, pain at jab site may happen but states have been trained to handle these side effects.

He asked people to carry photo ID cards to session sites which will be communicated to them through their registered mobile numbers and once they take the two doses 28 days apart they will be sent a digital certificate of successful vaccination.

Registration is mandatory to get a COVID vaccine.
