Govt's strength lies in accepting its limitations, Narendra Modi says in Chennai

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said a government’s strength rested in its humility to accept that it is not possible for it to control everything.

“There was a notion that a strong government means it should control everything and everyone. But we have changed this. A strong government does not control everything or everyone. It controls the system’s impulse to interfere. A strong government does not move into every domain. It limits itself and makes space for people’s talents,” the PM, who was speaking at the 42nd Convocation of Anna University in Chennai, said.

The PM said he encouraged reforms to create greater space for the blossoming of the talent of people in various fields. One of the main objectives of the New Education Policy is also to give the youth more freedom and flexibility with regard to making their academic choices and their future pursuits, he said.

The PM said as many as 25,000 compliances had been scrapped to remove hurdles for businesses to flourish. “Removal of angel tax and retrospective tax, and reduction of corporate tax are encouraging investments and industry. The reforms in drones, space and geospatial sectors are opening up new avenues,” the PM said.

Noting that societal attitude to entrepreneurship had also undergone a change, the Prime Minister said, “There is now trust in risk-takers. Earlier, at social occasions it was difficult for a youngster to say he or she was an entrepreneur. People used to tell them to ‘get settled’, meaning, get a salaried job. Now the situation is the opposite,” Modi said.

“The rise of risk-takers means two things for you. You can take risks on your own. Or you can build upon the opportunities created by others,” the Prime Minister said addressing the young engineering graduates 69 of whom were presented gold medals and certificates by him.

The PM said despite the pandemic, various sectors in the country are bustling with new life. “India received a record FDI of over 83 billion dollars last year. Start-ups, too, received a record funding post-pandemic. India’s position in the international trade dynamics is at its best ever now,” he said.

Modi said 25 years from now India would complete 100 years as an independent country and the youth would play a vital role during this journey.

“So, when you make your plans for yourself and your family, remember that you are automatically making plans for India too. It is a historic opportunity that only your generation has,” the PM told the young graduates.

Governor RN Ravi and Chief Minister MK Stalin were present on the occasion.
