Extension of 3 months for DGP Arora

Chandigarh, September 12

Punjab Director General of Police Suresh Arora got a three-month extension today, even as the state government issued a notification bringing the Special Task Force (STF) against drugs under the ambit of the DGP office.

The  extension order was issued by the Centre following a special recommendation by Punjab CM Capt Amarinder Singh to Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh.

The CM reportedly wanted to give a longer tenure to DGP Arora, but a Supreme Court ruling in July said a state has to submit names of prospective DGP candidates to the Centre, which will form a panel of three candidates for the state government to choose from.

Arora will now retire on December 31, unless he gets another extension. Under the rules, a DGP can be given two extensions of three months each.

Meanwhile, DGP Mohd Mustafa and ADGP Harpreet Sidhu have not so far joined their new postings. Mustafa has been posted as the STF head in place of Sidhu, who has been posted as the Special Principal Secretary to CMO. — TNS
