Dreaded gangster Ashok Rathi was gunned down reportedly by persons known to him as a gang-war erupted at Alipur village in Sohna.

Assailants, including Narender alias Sonu, Rohit Dagar alias Bobby of Rathi’s village and Salim of Hariyahera village barged, into the gangster’s home on Saturday morning and open fire at him.

While the accused fled, Rathi’s family rushed him to a private hospital in critical condition where he succumbed to his injuries after six hours.

Rathi’s brother alleged that one of their villager—Lilu Dagar, now residing in Gurugram, got eliminated his brother with help of three others. An FIR has been registered at Bhondsi police station.

Rathi (42) had entered the crime world in 1999 and was in jail since 2014 serving life term. On July 6, he came out on bail from Faridabad’s Neemka jail, where he was imprisoned in connection with his wife’s murder.

Around 8 am today, Rathi along with his brother Mahesh alias Nishu and friend Mahesh Kumar were having tea together, when three assailants came there and opened fire after a brief talk.

“We did not suspect that they were carrying weapons. After talking for 10 minutes, they pulled out their guns and attacked my brother. They fled when our neighbour Naveen came there. The attack was pre-planned by Lilu Dagar who arranged these shooters to attack my brother,” Mahesh alias Nishu, brother of Rathi said in his complaint to police.

Soon after they rushed Rathi to Park hospital from where he was referred to Medanta and around 3.10 pm he died. Police said he got four bullet in his chest, hand, near the ear and back.

An FIR has been registered against four accused Lilu Dagar, Narender alias Sonu, Rohit Dagar alias Bobby and Salim under Sections 307 (murder attempt), 452 (house trespassing), 34 (common intention), 120-B (criminal conspiracy) of IPC and section 25 (1A)-54-59 of Arms act at Bhondsi police station.

As per police records, Ashok Rathi was involved in more than 46 cases of murder, attempt to murder, robbery, dacoity, extortion and arms act. Some years ago Rathi had killed his mother-in-law Anguri Devi and brother-in-law Dharmender. He was sentenced for life in the same case.

In 2016, his wife Sushma was also murdered and he later confessed to the crime. In 2014, he fled from the UP police custody while on way to Gurugram court but was arrested in 24 hours.

He was facing trial in 8 cases while acquitted in 28 cases. He was convicted in four cases.

A senior police officer said that they are exploring the CCTV footage of Rathi’s home. Family alleged three shooters were known to Rathi and accused Lilu Dagar of criminal conspiracy.

“Five special teams are conducting raids to nab the accused,” said Satyender Dahiya, ACP, Sohna.
