A 17-year-old girl allegedly committed suicide inside the Tilak Vihar police station late Saturday night. She was a class XII student.
The girl’s mother, Sunari Kaur, alleged a neighbour had been pressuring her daughter to get married to their son Happy Singh. “After we turned down the proposal, the family started harassing us ,” she claimed.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Vijay Kumar said the girl approached the police station at 2 am, pleading she didn’t want to
return home. “There was a dispute between the girl’s family and their neighbours. At that time, no woman constable was present at the police station. Both families were called. A fight broke out between them.
“As the officers on duty were planning to send the girl to a Nari Niketan since she refused to go home, she girl went to an adjacent room and hanged herself.”
The deceased’s brother, Jasbeer, alleged his family was locked up in a room in the police station while the girl was sent to another room. “When I peeped through the window, I saw my sister’s body hanging from a ceiling fan,” he said.
His elder brother Gurjeet asked, “How could my sister hang herself in such a short time. A video recorded by us shows that her feet were touching the floor. This was not possible if she had hanged herself.” A probe has been initiated.
