Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday urged political parties and MPs for debate and discussions on the floor of Parliament and noted that the current decade is vital to the golden future of India.

Speaking ahead of the start of the Budget session with the address of President Ram Nath Kovind to a joint sitting of Parliament on Friday, the Prime Minister said, “The coming decade is vital for India’s progress. We have to remember the vision and dreams of the greats who fought for our nation’s freedom. Let there be detailed debate and discussions on the floor of Parliament.”

The PM was speaking a day after 18 opposition parties announced that they would boycott the address of the President in solidarity with the farmers who are seeking the repeal of agriculture reform laws.

The PM said, “I hope the MPs will see this decade in the light of its significance for India’s growth and development. The Budget session is the first session of a new decade. I hope the MPs will, keeping in mind the responsibility the constituents have given them and keeping democratic traditions in mind, use Parliament for debates and discussions.”

The PM said 2020 saw the Finance Minister announce many mini budgets to ease the strains on the economy.

“I hope the people and parties will see the upcoming budget as an extension of the mini budgets the government has had to present through the last year,” the PM said in his customary address ahead of a parliament session.

The PM will also chair an all-party meeting on Saturday to discuss issues to be taken up in the Budget session.

The Lok Sabha speaker will hold an all-party meeting on Friday.
