Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday hit back at Rahul Gandhi over his criticism of demonetisation decision, saying the Congress and the ‘family’ alone were “weeping” over note ban even after two years as “deposits of their four generations” were gone.

Dubbed as “the biggest scam” since independence by Congress chief Rahul Gandhi, Modi said demonetisation brought money into the banking system that is being used for public good.

Modi also challenged the faction-ridden Congress to declare its chief ministerial candidate. “How can a party chief, who is unable to decide the CM face, take decisions about the future of the people,” he said. “The Congress party in the state speaks in eight different languages in eight regions. Every area has its own leader... I challenge the party to declare its chief ministerial candidate,” Modi said.

During the Congress rule, Madhya Pradesh was counted among “BIMARU” states, while under the BJP it is known as “Maximum Progress” (MP) state, he said.

The Congress’ state unit has been faction-ridden with Digvijay Singh, Kamal Nath and Jyotiraditya Scindia leading some of the groups, though the party has maintained that it is united in its fight against the BJP.

In Chhattisgarh, Modi dared the Congress to make someone “from outside the family” as its chief for him to believe “a chaiwala could become PM due to Nehru”. “If you claim that because of your principles, your faith in democracy, the Constitution and Pandit Nehru, Modi, a chaiwala, could become the PM, appoint someone good from outside the (Gandhi) family as the Congress president for just five years,” he said. — PTI
