Waris Pathan, MLA from Mumbai's Byculla belonging to the All India Majlis Ittihadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), has apologised for visiting a pandal and chanting 'Ganpati Bappa Morya' during the recently-concluded Ganesh festival.

Pathan, a prominent criminal lawyer from Mumbai, released a video apologising for the "un-Islamic act" after he was criticised by some hardline elements in the Muslim community. "Some days ago I did something which was wrong. I, in the name of Prophet Muhammad, seek Allah's forgiveness for this and promise that I will never do this again," Pathan said in the video which is being shared on WhatsApp groups in his constituency.

Pathan was reportedly criticised by some members of the Muslim clergy for allegedly violating the Islamic taboo on idol worship.
