Rains during the second half (August and September) of the ongoing monsoon season is expected to be normal, or average — 94 to 106% of the long period average (LPA) — the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said today. However, northwest is expected to get below normal rains during this period.

“Normal to above normal rainfall is expected over most parts of South India. Below normal rainfall is likely over many parts of the west coast and some parts of east-central, east and northeast India,” said the weather office.

During August, above-normal maximum temperatures are likely over many parts of east-central, east and northeast India and some parts of northwest and south interior peninsular. Normal to below-normal maximum temperatures are likely over the remaining parts of the country, the weather office said.

At present, La Niña conditions are prevailing over the equatorial Pacific region. The latest Monsoon Mission Climate Forecasting System forecast indicates that La Niña conditions are likely to continue till the end of the year.

Meanwhile, Delhi's 24-hour air quality index was recorded as 71, a satisfactory category. The average air quality index this July stood at 87. Only July 2020 was better with an average AQI of 84 -- the city had recorded a significant decline in pollution levels that year due to the strict lockdown to prevent the spread of Covid.
