New Delhi, July 4
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the freedom struggle was not confined to a limited period or waged only in a certain area and revolved around a handful of people.
“The history of freedom struggle is history of tenacity and sacrifices by people in every nook and corner of India. History of our freedom movement is a symbol of the strength of our diversity, culture and of our unity as a nation,” he said.
The PM was speaking after launching year-long 125th birth anniversary celebration of freedom fighter Alluri Sitarama Raju in Bhimavaram, Andhra Pradesh.
Describing Raju as symbol of India’s culture, valour and ideals, the PM said life of Raju was an inspiration. He dedicated his life for the rights of tribal society and India’s freedom. Raju, born on July 4, 1897, had led tribals who revolted against the British for introducing various laws that favoured zamindars and merchants. Known as the Rampa Rebellion, the uprising came to an end when Raju was executed by the British in 1924.
Modi unveiled a bronze statue of Alluri installed by the Kshatriya Seva Samiti. He felicitated Alluri Srirama Raju, Alluri’s nephew, and Bodi Dora, son of Alluri’s close lieutenant Mallu Dora.
