Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday attacked previous governments of shedding crocodile tears for farmers but keeping development projects to help them stalled for decades.

Addressing a public rally at Mirzapur after inaugurating the Rs 3420 crore Bansagar project which will irrigate 1.50 lakh hectares, PM Modi said the project was to initially cost Rs 350 crores but escalated to Rs 3,420 crore after a lapse of twenty years.

“You are the people who suffered through all of this. Had this project been completed in time you would have been benefited by it two decades ago,” he said.

“This was one of the atki, latki, bhatki (suspended, pending and derailed) projects of the previous government which was taken up by us.”

PM Modi said that those shedding crocodile tears for farmers kept the proposal to increase MSP hidden in files as they had no time to take it up.

Listing the various central schemes launched by his government during the last four years, PM Modi said it had bridged the gap between the rich and the poor.

On the second day of his Purvanchal visit, PM Modi also launched a bridge across the Ganga in Chunar, laid the foundation stones for a medical college, inaugurated 108 Jan Aushadhi Kendras and laid the foundation for a Rs 229-crore project of widening the Mirzapur-Allahabad national highway.
